Artists Statement

I’ve enjoyed responding to different landscapes within the ACT but it was a unique opportunity offered recently to spend time at Lanyon Homestead and in particular the area within and around the Heritage Centre. In this environment, I was able to spend time in solitude to focus on the fragments and light effects that make up that landscape. I was particularly struck by the myriad of shapes, shadows and textures within that landscape. Tree shapes, some resembling sculptures, long shadows in the afternoon and the look and feel of the textures of the bark on trees. This experience has made me focus on the minuture of a landscape rather than trying to capture the larger overarching view. Using media such as charcoal, gouache, pencil and acrylic paint I was able to immediately respond to the small things on the ground, within bushes and the light and dark of the trees.

I studied at the Australian National University, gaining a Bachelor of Arts with a major in painting. I also have two Graduate Diplomas from the University of Canberra in Library and Information Management and Secondary Teaching. I have taught art at a variety of high schools in Canberra and been a facilitator and mentor in the Messengers program at Tuggeranong Art Centre where I worked with troubled teenagers.  I have also run workshops in painting and drawing for the U3A. I am a member of ASOC and U3A and have exhibited my work widely, most recently at Kyeema Gallery in Hall, at M16artspace with the Drawing Creatively group, and at ANU School of Art in partnership with Geoscience Australia in an exhibition called ‘Art of the Collection’.
